Energy Costs Become Insurmountable for Homeowners
As winter sets in, many households across the UK are bracing themselves for rising energy bills, with oil prices hitting record highs. One homeowner, Roslynn Garner-Gatley, is among those feeling the pinch. The 62-year-old mother-of-two has found herself unable to afford the heating, forcing her to adapt to cold temperatures. Ms Garner-Gatley, who lives in a three-bedroom semi-detached house in Northern Ireland, relies on oil-fired central heating to keep her home warm during the winter months. However, with prices at an all-time high, she can no longer afford the fuel required to operate it. To cope, Ms Garner-Gatley has become increasingly resourceful, using alternative methods to stay warm. One of these is a hot water bottle filled with boiling water, which she wraps around her legs and feet for added warmth. She has also resorted to wearing bed socks at night to keep her extremities cozy. Furthermore, Ms Garner-Gatley has changed her bedtime routine to accommodate the cold temperatures. With no heating to keep her warm during the day, she now retires earlier to avoid feeling chilly on arrival home from work. This means that she often finds herself asleep by 8 pm, a significant adjustment from her usual late-night bedtime. The impact of rising energy costs on households like Ms Garner-Gatley’s is set to be felt across the UK in the coming months. As prices continue to soar, many homeowners will be forced to make similar compromises to stay warm during the winter season.
