Google Staff Demand Cuts in Ties with Immigration Enforcer
A growing coalition of Google employees, numbering over 950, is urging the tech giant to sever its business ties with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The group’s call for action comes as protests and petitions spread across campuses nationwide. In a petition circulating among employees, Google staff argue that their employer’s partnerships with ICE undermine efforts to protect undocumented workers from deportation. “By facilitating our participation in government-funded programs and by hosting ICE-sponsored events on campus, we are indirectly contributing to the harm inflicted upon our undocumented colleagues,” reads one of the letters. The petition is being spearheaded by a group called ‘Google Workers for Immigrant Rights’, which has organized rallies, workshops, and town halls across multiple Google hubs. Participants emphasize that their actions aim to safeguard workplace protections for all employees, regardless of immigration status. Representatives from Google have yet to release an official statement on the employee-led initiative, but signs indicate a growing trend towards corporate accountability in addressing human rights concerns tied to federal policies. As corporate America reconsiders its relationships with government agencies, Google workers are pushing forward as vocal advocates for workplace justice and immigrant rights.
