Millions Fined for Misleading Sales Tactics Across Multiple Sectors
The Competition and Markets Authority has imposed a total fine of £6 million on three firms: Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Gold’s Gym. Wayfair, the US-based online home goods retailer, was fined £3 million for allegedly misleading customers with out-of-date product information. The CMA found that the company had failed to provide accurate details about products, including their prices, delivery times, and availability. Appliances Direct, a UK-based appliance retailer, received a fine of £1.5 million for using high-pressure sales tactics to persuade customers into purchasing unnecessary extras. The CMA claimed that the firm had breached consumer protection laws by failing to provide clear information about the costs involved. Gold’s Gym, a global fitness chain, was fined £1.5 million for allegedly making false claims about its health and wellness services. The CMA said that Gold’s Gym had advertised its services as more effective than those of other competitors, without providing evidence to support these claims. The fines are aimed at protecting consumers from unfair trading practices and ensuring that businesses comply with consumer protection laws.
