Norway's Equinor Seals Deal to Develop Record-Breaking Renewable Energy Project in Brazil
Equinor has finalized the acquisition of two wind farms located on the São João do Estreito Island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, marking a significant milestone for the Norwegian energy giant as it pushes into new markets in South America. The deal brings Equinor’s total installed renewable energy capacity in Brazil to over 230 megawatts (MW), with plans to further expand operations under its growing presence in the country. Equinor has been expanding its renewable energy portfolio in recent years, aiming to cut its carbon footprint and transition towards a more sustainable business model. The development of these wind farms will contribute significantly to this goal, as they are set to generate enough electricity for approximately 120,000 homes. The São João do Estreito Island project is considered one of the most ambitious renewable energy initiatives in Brazil’s history, with Equinor committing to invest heavily in infrastructure and workforce development to ensure the long-term success of the wind farms. “We are excited about this new opportunity to develop two significant wind farms off the coast of Brazil,” said Ana Catarina Sampaio, Equinor’s executive vice president for Brazil. “Our presence in this region is a key part of our strategy to grow sustainably and reduce carbon emissions.” The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs during its construction phase and generate significant economic benefits for local communities. With this latest acquisition, Equinor solidifies its position as one of the leading players in Brazil’s burgeoning renewable energy sector, with a focus on expanding its presence through partnerships and investments that support sustainable development.
