Pentagon Ditches Anthropic AI Amid Supply Chain Concerns
The US Department of Defense has halted its use of Anthropic AI technology months after blacklisting the company, citing concerns over safety and security protocols. In a move seen as part of a broader effort to enhance supply chain resilience, the Pentagon had initially flagged Anthropic as a high-risk vendor in February following disagreements over the implementation of safeguard measures in its AI tools. Following this initial assessment, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) directed other government agencies and contractors to avoid using Anthropic’s products, pending resolution of these issues. As concerns persisted, however, the Pentagon has since taken the step of eliminating its reliance on Anthropic’s technology. This development comes as part of a heightened focus on mitigating risks associated with AI adoption in critical infrastructure sectors such as defense and national security. The blacklisting of Anthropic underscores the growing unease among government agencies over the reliability and safety of certain AI systems, particularly those developed by prominent companies. The Pentagon’s actions are seen as an exercise in caution, aimed at preventing potential vulnerabilities that could compromise sensitive information or put national security at risk.
