The four new designs for the next series of British banknotes have been announced by the Bank of England, featuring unique illustrations of wildlife native to the UK.
A tawny owl, a mountain hare, a red kites, and a adder are set to replace the current images on banknotes. The designs were chosen from over 80 entries submitted by artists and designers through an open competition. The owls are the most widely distributed bird species in the UK, with populations found across the country. They will feature on the new £50 note. The mountain hare is a well-known inhabitant of the UK’s mountainous regions, featuring white fur in winter and brown in summer. It will be featured on the new £20 note. Red kites are iconic birds often seen soaring overhead in the countryside. They will appear on the new £10 note. The adder, the UK’s only venomous snake species, is set to feature on the new £5 note.
