Morocco to Host Cameroon in AFCON’s Heavyweight Quarterfinal
The Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat will host a crucial match between Morocco and five-time champions Cameroon on Friday, January 9 at 8pm (19:00 GMT). The teams are set to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations’ heavyweight quarterfinal.
Cameroon, who have reached the quarterfinals despite facing off-the-field issues during their build-up to the tournament, will be up against Morocco. The Indomitable Lions have been involved in a high-profile battle between their federation and the sports ministry, with coach Marc Brys employed against the wishes of four-time African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto’o.
The match will feature several high-profile players, including Brahim Diaz, Achraf Hakimi, Bryan Mbeumo, and Carlos Baleba. Cameroon have spent 18 months in a dispute between their federation and the sports ministry, with Brys eventually being fired three weeks before the AFCON. The team has been led by coach David Pagou since then.
In the round of 16, Cameroon beat South Africa 2-1, thanks to goals from Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane. They finished runners-up in Group F with two wins and a draw, settling for the second spot due to fewer goals scored than the table toppers.
Morocco topped Group A with a similar record, bagging two wins and a draw for seven points. The winner of this match will face the winner of the Algeria vs Nigeria match in the semifinals on January 14 in Rabat.
