A Pattern of Online Harassment Emerges: AI-Generated Imagery Targeting Muslim Women

Researchers have identified a trend in online harassment involving the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate sexualized imagery and propaganda targeting Muslim women. A study by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found that AI-generated images and videos featuring Muslim women garnered over 6.7 million interactions across social media platforms.

The study analyzed 1,326 publicly available AI-generated images and videos collected from 297 public accounts on X, Facebook, and Instagram between May 2023 and May 2025. The researchers noted that these images and videos received the highest engagement rates among all categories.

Experts have reported an increase in cases of online harassment involving AI-generated content. Meri Trustline, an online safety helpline run by the RATI Foundation, has seen a growing volume of such cases. The helpline’s 2024 report revealed that women not in the public eye are also being targeted through images that can result in real harm.

The study highlights the potential for AI to be used to create highly realistic and engaging visual content. Zenith Khan, coauthor of the study, noted that “image generators and deepfakes allow individuals to convert hostile narratives into highly realistic visual material with minimal technical expertise.”

Front-line counselors at Meri Trustline have documented a rise in cases involving digitally manipulated material. The organization has handled over 482 cases since its inception in 2022, with roughly 10% of them involving AI-generated content.

The victims of these online harassment incidents often experience shame, fear, and trauma. Many cases are not reported to close family members or the public, highlighting the need for increased awareness and support for those affected by online harassment.
