UN Aid Trucks Reach Cut-Off Area in Sudan Amid Drone Attacks
Aid trucks from the United Nations have arrived in Dilling and Kadugli, two cities in central Sudan’s Kordofan region that have been cut off from relief efforts for over two years. The World Food Programme transported more than 700 metric tons of food commodities to support nearly 70,000 people, including 21,000 mothers and children with specialized nutritious food.
The UN stated that the aid delivery came as a response to severe shortages of humanitarian assistance in the region. More than 30 countries issued a statement expressing concern over recent drone attacks amid heavy fighting in the Darfur and Kordofan regions. The European Union, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom warned that intentional attacks against aid workers and wilfully impeding relief supplies may amount to war crimes.
According to monitoring group Emergency Lawyers, at least 28 people were killed and dozens more injured when drone-fired missiles hit a market in Sodari on Sunday. UN human rights chief Volker Turk expressed alarm over the increase in drone attacks, stating that they perpetuate a pattern of attacks on civilian objects and infrastructure.
The heavy fighting in the Kordofan region is part of a conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the country’s vital east-west axis. The RSF has pushed east through the oil and gold-rich Kordofan region, attempting to seize Sudan’s central corridor.
