Al Jazeera founder Jamal Rayyan passes away at age 73

Al Jazeera Arabic presenter Jamal Rayyan has passed away at the age of 73. He was a key figure in the network’s early days, presenting its first-ever bulletin when it launched on November 1, 1996.

Born in Tulkarem, Palestine in 1953, Rayyan began his career in broadcasting in 1974 with Jordanian Radio and Television. He later worked for several broadcasters in the region and beyond, including Emirati television, South Korean public broadcasting, and BBC Arabic.

Rayyan was selected to be the first face on Al Jazeera without prior knowledge of the role. According to him, he was told by the vice chairman of the board that he had been chosen but was asked not to disclose this information publicly. The announcement about his presentation was made just before airtime.

On the day of the launch, Rayyan entered the studio with an empty stomach to ensure a clear voice. He recalled feeling nervous as the broadcast began, but returned to normal after appearing on screen and introducing the channel. After completing the broadcast, he received applause from the staff.

Rayyan spent nearly three decades as a presenter for Al Jazeera, building a following of 2.3 million on X. During this time, he became a familiar presence in homes across the Arab world, known for his measured delivery and distinctive voice. His broadcasts and the channel’s editorial approach reached wide audiences and helped shape regional news coverage.

Jamal Rayyan passed away on Sunday at the age of 73.
