Alabamas Primary Elections Face Redistricting Review and Potential Changes

Alabama Voters May Face Return to Polls in August Due to Redistricting Push

Voters in Alabama are set to head back to the polls in August as part of a nationwide effort to redraw congressional maps. The state’s four congressional districts are expected to hold special primaries, following a Supreme Court decision that cleared the way for a new map to be implemented.

The new map would alter the district boundaries, clustering many Democratic voters into a single district. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced the special primary elections in response to the court’s decision. The originally scheduled primaries will still take place on Tuesday, alongside other national and statewide races.

Polling hours for the August primaries are set to begin at 7:00am local time and close at 7:00pm. The governor’s term is limited to two consecutive four-year terms, making Ivey ineligible for re-election in 2026. Her absence from the ballot has sparked a hotly contested primary to replace her.

Six Democrats and three Republicans are vying for the governorship. Whoever wins the Republican primary will have an advantage in November’s general election, as no Democrat has held the office since 2003. The most closely watched race is the contest for Tommy Tuberville’s US Senate seat, with ten candidates competing for the position.

The Republican field is crowded, with six contenders vying for the seat. Front-runners include state Attorney General Steve Marshall, Navy SEAL veteran Jared Hudson, and Barry Moore, a US representative from Alabama’s first district. Each candidate has tried to differentiate themselves through their platforms, which focus on border security, law enforcement, and Second Amendment rights.

If no Republican achieves at least 50% of the primary vote, a runoff is likely to take place in June. The August primaries will also determine which Democrat advances to November’s general election.
