Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Alberta is a key component of his plans for the country’s economy. The province announced on Friday that it will hold a referendum later this year on whether to hold a separate vote on leaving Canada.
Carney made the comments during a press conference in Calgary, where he highlighted cooperation between the federal government and various provinces and territories. He emphasized Alberta’s importance in the country’s economic development.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced that the province will put the question of holding a referendum on separating from Canada to voters later this year. The decision comes after a court blocked a petition to hold a vote on separation, citing concerns over consultation with Indigenous groups.
Smith expressed her opposition to separation but rejected the judicial ruling. She stated that she believes in Alberta’s democratic rights and will respect the results of the referendum.
The referendum question will be: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”
Several polls have shown that a majority of Albertans do not support independence for the province. The vote is expected to take place on October 19.
Carney’s comments on Alberta’s importance in his economic plans were made hours after Smith announced the referendum. He did not mention the upcoming vote during his press conference.
A group called Stay Free Alberta gathered over 300,000 signatures to trigger a separation vote, while another group, Forever Canada, has collected more than 400,000 signatures in support of remaining part of Canada.
