Alexander Vindman, a former National Security Council aide who testified during the 2019 impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Florida as a Democrat.
Vindman, who served as the director of Ukraine affairs at the National Security Council from 2018 to 2020, gained national attention for his testimony before Congress regarding Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. He is now seeking to represent Florida’s 20th congressional district in the U.S. Senate.
According to reports, Vindman has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission and is expected to appear on the ballot in the state’s primary election. His campaign has been endorsed by several prominent Democrats, including former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut.
Vindman’s entry into the race comes as Florida’s Democratic primary is shaping up to be a competitive contest. Other candidates vying for the nomination include Rep. Val Demings, Rep. Darren Soto, and state Sen. Janet Cruz.
The election is scheduled to take place in August 2024, with the general election set for November of that year.
