Burkina Faso Advances to Africa Cup of Nations Last 16 with 2-0 Win Over Sudan
In a group stage finale, Burkina Faso secured second place in Group E by defeating Sudan 2-0 at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca. The match was played on Wednesday, and it marked the end of the group stage for both teams.
Sudan’s Lassina Traore scored the opening goal for Burkina Faso in the 16th minute, followed by Arsene Kouassi’s late strike to seal the win. Sudan’s Algozoli Nooh missed a penalty opportunity that could have equalized the score.
The result means Sudan will face Senegal in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Burkina Faso. Algeria also advanced to the knockout stage, beating Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in their final group game.
Burkina Faso’s victory was a significant achievement for the team, considering they had already qualified for the knockout stage from Group E behind Algeria. The 2013 runners-up will face the winners of Group F in the last 16.
Sudan has struggled in the tournament, losing two of their three group stage matches. Despite this, they advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. They will face Senegal in Tangier on Saturday.
The match was played with a large crowd of Sudanese fans, who were disappointed by the team’s performance. The result marked a major achievement for Burkina Faso, which has been affected by war since 2023.
