Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif to Undergo Genetic Testing for Olympic Participation
Imane Khelif, a gold medalist in the women’s welterweight division at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has stated that she will comply with genetic testing requirements for participation in competitions. The International Boxing Association (IBA) had disqualified her from the 2023 World Championships due to sex chromosome tests.
In May, World Boxing announced mandatory sex testing for all boxers participating in its events. Khelif lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing that she should not be required to undergo genetic testing unless it is administered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Khelif emphasized her commitment to competing while ensuring her rights are protected. “I would accept doing anything I’m required to do to participate in competitions,” she said. However, she also expressed concern about being exploited for political agendas.
The 26-year-old boxer stated that she is hopeful of receiving justice from the CAS and will not surrender until she has achieved it. Khelif reiterated her identity as a woman and her desire to live her life without interference.
Khelif’s case highlights the ongoing debate surrounding sex testing in sports. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted provisional recognition to World Boxing, which will oversee boxing competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
