Security Guard Killed in San Diego Mosque Shooting Identified as Hero

A security guard at the Islamic Center of San Diego has been identified as Amin Abdullah, who was among three people killed in a shooting on Monday. Authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

According to reports, two teenage attackers opened fire at the mosque complex, resulting in multiple fatalities. The victims’ identities have not been publicly disclosed, but community leaders have confirmed that Abdullah played a pivotal role in preventing the attack from being more severe.

US officials stated that Abdullah “played a significant role” in stopping the attack, and San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl described his actions as “heroic.” Wahl also noted that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be revealed in due time.

Abdullah was reportedly a well-known face at the mosque, having worked there for over a decade. He had become a security guard to defend the innocent, according to Sheikh Uthman Ibn Farooq, a family friend who spoke with Abdullah’s son.

Online tributes have poured in for Abdullah, including posts from American Muslim scholar Omar Suleiman, who shared a screenshot of one of Abdullah’s Facebook posts. The posts express condolences and praise Abdullah’s actions as a hero.

Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the mosque complex around 11:43am local time, arriving within four minutes. Authorities found evidence of “generalized hate rhetoric” from the suspects, but declined to provide further details.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities still searching for the suspects who killed themselves a few blocks away from the scene.
