US Conducts Air Strikes in Nigeria, Targeting ISIL

The United States has carried out a series of air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northwestern Nigeria. According to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the aim is to prevent the group from killing “innocent Christians”.

In November, President Donald Trump stated that the US would take action against ISIL if the Nigerian government continued to allow what he described as targeting of Christians. The recent air strikes have sparked concerns about potential fallout in Nigeria, which has a complex and diverse religious landscape.

Experts have weighed in on the implications of the US actions. Malik Samuel, senior researcher at Good Governance Africa, noted that the situation is “sensitive” due to Nigeria’s diverse population. Ebenezer Obadare, senior fellow for Africa studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, observed that the US actions may be seen as an attempt to influence Nigeria’s domestic politics.

David Otto, deputy director of counterterrorism training at the International Academy for the Fight Against Terrorism, emphasized the importance of understanding the local context. “The Nigerian government must ensure that any action taken against ISIL is in line with international law and respects the country’s sovereignty,” he said. The full extent of the impact of the US air strikes on Nigeria remains to be seen.
