‘Arbitrary measures’: Lula slams US ‘terror’ designation for Brazil gangs

Brazil President Lula da Silva has expressed concerns over a US decision to designate two of Brazil’s largest criminal networks as “terrorists”. In a statement posted on social media platforms, Lula clarified the distinction between domestic crime and international terrorism. He stated that while the activities of these groups are violent and profit-driven, they do not share the same ideological or political motivations as international terrorist organizations.

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, had previously announced plans to add the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and the Comando Vermelho (CV) to the list of “foreign terrorist organisations”, effective June 5. This move has been met with opposition from Lula’s administration, who have expressed concerns that such designations could freeze US-based assets connected to these groups and potentially affect financial institutions and victims.

Lula also warned that the use of the “terrorist” label could pave the way for US military intervention in Brazil. He reiterated his commitment to finding joint solutions with other nations, but emphasized that he will not tolerate arbitrary measures imposed from abroad. The Brazilian president has been critical of the Trump administration’s actions, citing concerns about undermining local law enforcement efforts and sovereignty.

The move comes as Lula is in the midst of a heated election season, seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term as Brazil’s president. His main opponent, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, is also running for office and has been accused by Lula of leveraging his family connections to influence foreign authorities.
