Astronauts Return to Earth After Completing Lunar Mission with NASAs Artemis II

NASA Completes First Crewed Mission Around the Moon in Over 50 Years

Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen safely returned to Earth on Friday, marking the first crewed mission to travel around the Moon in more than five decades. The Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California at 5:07pm local time.

The recovery teams were already in position, securing the capsule and bringing the crew aboard shortly after re-entry. The spacecraft had completed a high-speed re-entry through Earth’s atmosphere, with temperatures on its exterior reaching approximately 2,760 degrees Celsius during the 13-minute descent.

The Orion spacecraft was designed to withstand the intense conditions of lunar re-entry, and this mission served as a crucial test for the vehicle. The crew reported minor communication issues but were otherwise in good condition upon recovery.

The four astronauts launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida just over a week ago, embarking on a 10-day journey that took them farther from Earth than any humans since the Apollo era. They traveled around the far side of the Moon, testing systems designed for future missions before returning to Earth.

This mission marked several historic firsts, including the first crewed mission around the Moon in over 50 years and the participation of astronauts from diverse backgrounds. The crew reported witnessing various celestial events during their journey, including a solar eclipse and meteorite impacts.

NASA will now analyze key data from the mission, including the performance of the Orion capsule’s heat shield, navigation systems, and life-support technology.
