Lebanon Experiences Continued Violence Despite US-Brokered Ceasefire
A recent surge in deadly attacks across Lebanon has resulted in at least 24 fatalities, despite a United States-brokered ceasefire that entered its third week on April 16. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that an Israeli attack on the town of al-Saksakieh in the southern Sidon district killed seven people, including a child, and wounded 15 others, including three children.
Separate incidents in Nabatieh, Nahrain, Saadiyat, Haboush, and Mefdoun also resulted in multiple fatalities. Additionally, an Israeli drone fired a guided missile at a motorcycle near shops along the Toul-Doueir road, killing one person, while three young men were killed in an air raid on a building in the al-Bayad neighborhood of Nabatieh.
The attacks occurred despite last month’s ceasefire aimed at halting fighting with the armed group Hezbollah. Since Israel’s invasion and bombardment of Lebanon began on March 2, nearly 500 people have been killed, bringing the overall death toll to over 2,750, according to the Health Ministry.
In a separate development, the US Department of State announced that it would mediate a second round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on May 14 and 15. The talks will focus on advancing a comprehensive peace and security agreement that addresses the core concerns of both countries.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah has continued to attack Israeli positions, launching artillery shell attacks on several towns in southern Lebanon and claiming to have targeted an Israeli bulldozer in al-Abbad town. The Israeli army reported that several explosive drones had entered its territory, with air defenses intercepting projectiles launched towards troops operating in southern Lebanon.
