At Least 45 Die in Heavy Rain and Floods Across Afghanistan and Pakistan

Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in Afghanistan and Pakistan

At least 45 people have been killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan over the past five days due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) of Afghanistan, 28 people have lost their lives, while 49 others have been injured. The floods have also destroyed over 100 homes.

The majority of deaths in Afghanistan were reported in central and eastern provinces, including Parwan, Maidan Wardak, Daikundi, and Logar. ANDMA stated that weather conditions remain unstable in parts of the country, with a continued risk of further rain and flooding in some areas. The authority also reported that 1,140 families have been affected by the floods.

In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which shares a border with Afghanistan, 17 people were killed and 56 others were wounded. A 14-year-old boy died after being struck by lightning in the northwestern province of Badghis, while three people drowned while trying to gather driftwood.

Heavy rainfall has continued to affect multiple provinces in Afghanistan since Thursday, causing floods and landslides. Several highways have been closed due to the weather, according to officials in central and eastern Afghanistan. The National Disaster Management Authority has warned citizens to avoid using rivers and flooded streams and to follow the weather forecast closely.

The local disaster management department in Daikundi province reported that a five-year-old was killed when a roof collapsed, while a woman died under similar circumstances in Nangarhar province. Afghanistan is prone to extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and monsoon seasons, which can trigger floods and landslides in remote areas with fragile infrastructure.
