Attack on Pakistani outpost threatens fragile Afghanistan ceasefire

Multiple Attacks in Northwest Pakistan Kill Over 20 People

A security compound in northwest Pakistan was targeted by an armed group on Thursday, resulting in significant loss of life. The attack, claimed by the Afghan-based Pakistan Taliban (TTP), involved a vehicle filled with explosives being rammed into the gate of the Bajaur district camp. A gun battle ensued, and reports indicate that eight or nine Pakistani soldiers were killed in the assault.

According to officials, at least 10 attackers were also killed, while approximately 35 security personnel were wounded. The blast was reportedly felt over 20 kilometers away from the compound, causing damage to nearby structures. Pakistani military troops responded by shutting down nearby roads and surrounding the compound.

This incident is part of a series of attacks in the region that have resulted in the deaths of more than 20 people in recent days. Other incidents include a car bomb targeting a police post, which killed over a dozen, and an explosion at a market that claimed the lives of at least nine people.

The Pakistan Taliban has taken responsibility for the attack, while Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of harbouring armed groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul denies these allegations, leading to ongoing tensions between the two countries. The situation remains volatile, with sporadic violence reported in recent days.

According to the United Nations, the cross-border conflict has resulted in at least 372 Afghan civilian deaths and nearly 400 injuries in the first three months of 2026 alone.
