A Hospital Attack in East Darfur State, Sudan, Results in Significant Casualties
On Friday night, an attack on Al Deain Teaching Hospital in Al Deain, the capital of East Darfur state, has rendered the facility non-functional. According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 64 people have been killed, including 13 children. Additionally, two female nurses and one male doctor were among those who lost their lives.
In total, 89 people, including eight health staff, were injured in the attack. The hospital’s pediatric, maternity, and emergency departments were damaged, resulting in the loss of essential medical services in the city.
The WHO has confirmed that this incident is part of a larger pattern of violence against healthcare facilities during Sudan’s ongoing conflict. Since the conflict began in mid-April 2023, the organization has reported 2,036 fatalities linked to attacks on healthcare facilities. The war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in significant human suffering, with tens of thousands of people killed and over 12 million displaced.
The WHO has expressed concern about the ongoing violence and its impact on civilians, health workers, and humanitarian responders. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that “enough blood has been spilled” and called for de-escalation of the conflict to ensure the protection of those affected.
