Australia Imposes Travel Ban on Iranian Citizens Amid Ongoing Conflict

Australia Temporarily Bans Iranian Visitors Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Australian Home Affairs Department has announced a six-month ban on visitors from Iran, citing concerns that the ongoing conflict in the country may lead to difficulties for Iranian passport holders returning home after their short-term visas expire. The decision is deemed necessary for Australia’s “national interest” amidst rapidly changing global conditions.

According to the department, the risk of temporary visa holders being unable or unwilling to depart Australia when their visas expire has increased due to the conflict in Iran. This measure allows the government time to assess the situation and provides flexibility in limited cases.

The ban applies to Iranian citizens currently outside Australia, including those with Australian visitor visas for tourism or work. Exceptions include Iranian citizens already in Australia, those in transit, spouses, de facto partners, dependent children of Australian citizens, and those with permanent visas. Exemptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that decisions regarding permanent residency should be made by the government, rather than being influenced by individual circumstances. The government is monitoring developments and will adjust its policies as needed to ensure Australia’s migration system remains orderly, fair, and sustainable.

The ban has been met with criticism from some groups, who argue that it undermines Australia’s onshore protection program for those seeking safety.
