Zimbabwe Defeats Australia by 23 Runs in Group B Match at T20 World Cup
In a surprise result, Zimbabwe beat a depleted Australia team by 23 runs in their Group B match at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. The Zimbabweans posted 169-2 in their 20 overs, with Brian Bennett scoring 64 not out to help them gain control of the game.
Australia’s top order was quickly dismantled by opening bowlers Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans, who took out four wickets for a combined total of 29 runs. The Australians were then dismissed for 146 in 19.3 overs, with Ryan Burl taking the crucial wicket of Glenn Maxwell for 31.
Bennett’s unbeaten 64 off 56 balls was a highlight of the match, as he controlled his aggression and found the boundary seven times. He also shared a record stand of 70 runs with Ryan Burl, which is Zimbabwe’s highest partnership in T20 World Cup history.
The win marks a significant upset for Australia, who are ranked second in the tournament. Without their captain Mitchell Marsh and pace spearheads Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, the team’s campaign is under threat. The Australians will need to regroup and recover from this loss if they hope to progress in the tournament.
In related news, a group of Zimbabwe fans celebrated the win with a traditional dance, while Tim David made his debut for Australia but was dismissed for two runs after suffering a hamstring injury earlier in the season.
