Sri Lanka Advances to Super Eights with Win Over Australia
In a match played at Pallekele International Stadium, Sri Lanka defeated Australia by eight wickets on Monday, advancing their team to the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup. Pathum Nissanka scored 100 not out off 52 balls for Sri Lanka, helping his team reach 184-2 with two overs to spare.
Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh expressed disappointment after the match, stating that his team had not performed at their best and was now on the brink of elimination. The Australian team had been plagued by injuries throughout the tournament, including Marsh himself, who returned from injury for this game.
Sri Lanka’s opener Nissanka became the first Sri Lankan to score two hundreds in T20 internationals, while teammate Kusal Mendis posted his third fifty in the competition. After Mendis was dismissed, Pavan Rathnayake put on 76 runs with Nissanka to seal the victory.
Australia had set a target of 181 for Sri Lanka, which they reached easily. The Australian team’s slow bowlers, including leg spinner Dushan Hemantha, restricted their opponents to 181 runs. However, Australia collapsed in the final stages of the game, losing all six wickets for just 21 runs.
The outcome of this match has significant implications for Australia’s chances of survival in the tournament. A victory by Zimbabwe over Ireland or against Sri Lanka on Thursday would eliminate Australia from the competition. Meanwhile, a win by Zimbabwe over Ireland on Tuesday could also put Australia at risk of elimination if they fail to secure a big margin in their final game against Oman on Friday.
Other teams have also advanced to the Super Eights, including England and Afghanistan. England survived a scare from Italy to post 202-7, while Afghanistan registered their first win of the tournament after beating the United Arab Emirates by five wickets.
