Australian Gaza aid flotilla activists claim abuse following Israeli detention

Australian Activists Detained by Israeli Authorities Return Home

A group of Australian activists who were part of a flotilla attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip have returned home, with some reporting incidents of abuse, sexual assault, and beatings while in detention.

Eleven Australians were among 430 volunteers on 50 boats intercepted in international waters last week by Israeli forces. The activists were detained for several days before being released. Juliet Lamont, an Australian activist and documentary filmmaker, stated that she was dragged, sexually assaulted, and beaten during her detention.

Another Australian activist, Sam Woripa Watson, reported sustaining a fractured rib along with bruises and cuts across his body. He also witnessed activists being Tasered and shot with rubber bullets, and stun grenades were thrown at them.

The flotilla included participants from 40 countries and aimed to deliver aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Organisers of the flotilla reported that some activists faced abuse while in Israeli detention, including at least 15 incidents of sexual assault or rape.

Malaysian officials have stated that their country is prepared to launch legal proceedings against Israel over the alleged mistreatment of Malaysian activists once lawyers finalise the collection of information and supporting evidence. Amirudin Shari, the chief minister of the Malaysian state of Selangor, said that his country will not remain silent and will continue diplomatic pressure.

Foreign ministers from several countries have condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s actions against the activists, calling them “appalling, degrading, and unacceptable”.
