A 47-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a five-year-old Indigenous girl, Kumanjayi Little Baby. The suspect, Jefferson Lewis, is also facing two other undisclosed charges related to the incident.
According to police, Lewis will appear in court in Darwin on Tuesday. He was arrested on Saturday evening and had previously been released from prison due to past convictions for physical assault.
The girl’s death sparked protests by approximately 400 Indigenous people near Alice Springs on Thursday, following the capture of the suspect after he was found unconscious by locals. The protesters demanded that police hand over the suspect, leading to clashes with authorities. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, and several individuals were arrested in connection with a reported riot.
The girl had gone missing from an Indigenous community camp, prompting a extensive search effort involving local residents, law enforcement, and aerial support. Her body was later found on Thursday.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed condolences for the victim’s family, stating that “no words can measure up to the immensity of the grief they are going through.” Robin Granites, a spokesman for the family and an elder of the Warlpiri Indigenous group, called for respect and space for grieving and remembering.
The incident highlights ongoing issues faced by Indigenous Australians, including inadequate housing and services in camp communities. The Northern Territory Police Commissioner has stated that the case is being investigated, but no further details have been released at this time.
