US Players Secure Historic Quarterfinal Spots in Australian Open
Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula have advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals at the Australian Open, setting up an all-American matchup against each other. The pair defeated Wang Xinyu of China and Keys respectively, marking a significant milestone for American tennis.
Anisimova beat Wang Xinyu 7-6 (4), 6-4, while Pegula secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Keys. This achievement marks the first time since 2001 that four Americans have reached the women’s singles quarterfinals in Australia.
In the men’s draw, Jannik Sinner has secured a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating compatriot Luciano Darderi in three sets. Sinner will face either Ben Shelton or Casper Ruud for a place in the semifinals.
Sinner’s victory came hours after Keys was eliminated by Pegula. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek has advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating qualifier Maddison Inglis 6-0, 6-3. Swiatek will face Elena Rybakina in the next round.
In the men’s draw, Sinner sent down a total of 19 aces during his match against Darderi. Lorenzo Musetti has also reached the quarterfinals for the first time in Australia, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
