Australians protest ban on World Cup screenings in Melbournes Federation Square

Melbourne’s Federation Square to Not Screen World Cup Matches Due to Past Fan Behavior

The management of Melbourne’s Federation Square has announced that it will not be screening any World Cup matches on its big screen for the first time in at least 20 years. The decision comes after a series of incidents marred previous public watch parties during Australia’s games in past tournaments.

In 2022, fans gathered in large numbers to watch Australia’s matches at the square, with some celebrations going viral on social media. However, the atmosphere turned sour when fans were injured by flares and projectiles, and barricades were stormed during a Women’s World Cup semifinal match between Australia and England.

As a result of these incidents, the venue’s management has decided not to show any World Cup matches on its big screen this year. The decision was made after careful consideration, citing “unacceptable and damaging” behavior by a small number of fans at previous screenings.

The decision has sparked a strong response from Australian football players, officials, and fan groups, who argue that the majority of well-behaved supporters are being penalized by a minority. Football Australia has expressed disappointment and urged the Melbourne Arts Precinct to reverse its decision.

The decision is also seen as a blow to local businesses and the wider community, which have benefited from the large crowds and festive atmosphere generated by World Cup matches at Federation Square. The Australian women’s team captain, Sam Kerr, has condemned the decision on social media, calling it “booooooooo”.
