Bahrain summons Iraqi envoy amid ongoing pro-Iranian attacks in the Gulf

Bahrain Summons Iraqi Envoy Over Drone Attacks

A diplomatic meeting between Bahrain and Iraq took place on Monday, resulting in Bahrain summoning an Iraqi envoy over drone attacks launched at the kingdom and other states in the region. The move follows similar action by Saudi Arabia the previous day.

According to reports from Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a protest note was delivered during the meeting with the Iraqi charge d’affaires, Ahmed Ismail al-Karawi. The note called on Baghdad to address “these threats and attacks urgently and responsibly”.

The incidents in question involve drone attacks launched by pro-Iranian groups based in Iraq towards Bahrain and several Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Despite a US-Iran ceasefire that has been in place since Wednesday, the attacks continue.

Several Gulf countries, including Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, have previously called on Baghdad to stop attacks from its territory by Iran-aligned groups. The Iraqi government has denied using its territory for such purposes, stating it is taking necessary measures “in accordance with the constitution and the law”.

The situation highlights regional concerns over pro-Iranian groups in Iraq and complicates Baghdad’s efforts to rebuild ties with its Arab neighbours.
