Bangladeshs Election Landscape Shaped by Unlikely Alliance

Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party to Contest Parliamentary Elections with Jamaat-e-Islami Alliance

The National Citizen Party (NCP), a political party born out of anti-Hasina protests in 2024, has announced its candidacy for this week’s parliamentary elections. The party’s leader, Nahid Islam, will be contesting the election alongside an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.

Islam, who was just 26 when he led student-led demonstrations against the government job quota system, is now standing as a candidate in the February 12 election. He has been a prominent figure in Bangladesh’s revolution and served as cabinet adviser in Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus’s transitional government.

The NCP was formed to address concerns about the country’s two dominant political parties, the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The party promised a “new political settlement” and centrist approach. However, its decision to form an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami has raised eyebrows among some party members.

The alliance has led to a rift within the NCP, with several senior figures and women leaders leaving the party due to concerns about its ideological direction. Islam defends his decision to team up with Jamaat, stating that it is an “electoral alliance, not ideological.” The two parties share common issues such as reform, combating corruption, and good governance.

The election is expected to be a closely contested vote, with observers predicting a close contest between the BNP and a Jamaat-led alliance. A national referendum on a package of reforms will also be held alongside the parliamentary elections. Polling suggests that the two main blocs are neck and neck, with the BNP leading at 33 percent and Jamaat close behind at 29 percent.

The NCP has fielded candidates in 30 seats as part of the alliance, while Jamaat has 222 candidates. The remaining seats will be contested by nine other partners.
