Barcelonas World Cup Squad Excludes Real Madrid for First Time

Spain Names World Cup Squad with Dominant Barcelona Presence

Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s national team coach, has explained the absence of Real Madrid players from the 26-man squad for next month’s World Cup tournament. The European champions have named a team dominated by eight Barcelona players and none from Real Madrid.

De la Fuente stated that the Spanish national team is considered the greatest team in his opinion, regardless of club affiliation. He emphasized that he selects players based on their ability to represent Spain and be part of a “united nation.”

The Barcelona contingent includes Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres. Seven players in the squad are based in the Premier League.

De la Fuente acknowledged that sporting considerations guided his selection, but also recognized that there is a subjective element to making team decisions. He emphasized that he will take responsibility for any mistakes made during the tournament.

The coach expressed optimism about the availability of several players who have been recovering from fitness concerns, including Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Mikel Merino. De la Fuente stated that Spain’s view extends beyond the first match and also considers the second match.

In a statement, de la Fuente said: “If we have to take a risk, mate, we’ll take it in a World Cup.” He added that youth has not diminished his sense of occasion for 18-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal.
