Aryna Sabalenka Loses Second Consecutive Grand Slam Final to Elena Rybakina
Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka has suffered her second consecutive loss in a major final, falling to Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open. The 2023 Australian Open champion lost to Rybakina in straight sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Sabalenka’s defeat marked her first loss of the tournament and followed a year ago’s loss to American Madison Keys in the final. In an interview after the match, Sabalenka expressed disappointment with herself, stating that she had opportunities to win but was unable to capitalize on them.
Rybakina, who won the title for the second time, held a 3-0 lead in the third set before Rybakina broke back and stormed to victory. Sabalenka acknowledged that she made mistakes, including unforced errors, which contributed to her loss.
This defeat marks Sabalenka’s third loss in her last four major finals, following losses at the French Open and WTA Finals. Despite this setback, Sabalenka remained gracious in defeat, congratulating Rybakina on her victory and expressing admiration for her opponent’s tennis.
In a post-match press conference, Sabalenka appeared to be struggling with emotions, but ultimately attributed her loss to Rybakina’s superior play. “I feel like I played great,” she said. “I was fighting. I did my best, and today she was a better player.”
