Israeli President Condemns Settler Violence Amid International Backlash
President Isaac Herzog has publicly condemned settler violence as “brutishness” that threatens all, stating it must be forbidden to abuse prisoners. The comments come amid an international outcry over treatment of Gaza aid activists and reports of sexual abuse in Israeli detention.
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has been at the center of controversy, with footage showing him gloating over detained activists who were forced to kneel on the floor with their arms bound. This was part of a flotilla attempt to break the siege of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. The incident triggered diplomatic backlash from multiple governments, including France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Ireland, Germany, and South Korea.
Ben-Gvir has been criticized for his past behavior, including being accompanied by camera crews during prison visits. He was also seen gloating over detained activists on camera. In response to the criticism, Ben-Gvir called for Herzog’s removal from office.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has ordered the advancement of the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar, a Bedouin village in the E1 corridor east of Jerusalem. The move is seen as retaliation for an International Criminal Court arrest warrant request against him.
The Knesset Education Committee has fast-tracked a bill to establish a heritage authority for the West Bank and Gaza, granting Israeli civilian bodies powers over archaeological sites across Areas A, B, and C in Gaza. However, the committee’s legal adviser warned that the bill contradicts international agreements.
Notorious settler leader Elisha Yared published a map documenting 219 illegal shepherding outposts established across the West Bank. The Israeli military has opposed the application of the bill to Gaza, warning it could be seen as de facto annexation.
In recent weeks, there have been reports of raids and arrests by Israeli forces in villages such as Al-Mughayyir, where soldiers beat activist Mohammed Abu Naim and ransacked homes.
