Benficas Jose Mourinho leads team to Champions League playoffs against Real Madrid

Benfica Secures Playoff Spot as Real Madrid Falls Short

In a thrilling match at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon, Benfica edged out Real Madrid 4-2, securing their place in the Champions League playoffs and denying their opponents an automatic spot in the last 16. The Portuguese side’s victory came despite trailing 3-2 with seconds remaining on the clock.

Real Madrid had hoped to finish in the top eight and advance directly to the last 16, but ultimately fell short due to accumulating only 15 points from eight games. The Spanish team was also reduced to nine men after Raul Asencio and Rodrygo were sent off during the match.

Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup scored two goals, while Vangelis Pavlidis netted one from a penalty spot, helping his team take an early lead. Kylian Mbappe responded with two goals for Real Madrid, including a 30-minute header that gave his team the lead.

The home side drew level six minutes later and took the lead again in first-half added time when Aurelien Tchouameni was adjudged to have hauled Nicolas Otamendi to the floor. However, Benfica equalized once more before taking the lead for good with a 98th-minute header from goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

The dramatic turn of events sparked wild celebrations from both teams’ players, fans, and coach Jose Mourinho, who is also a former manager of Real Madrid. The result has significant implications for the competition’s format, as a single goal can have such a profound impact on the table.
