Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania has declined to accept the “Most Valuable Film” prize at the Berlin International Film Festival’s Cinema for Peace Awards. The award was given to her project, The Voice of Hind Rajab. Ben Hania stated that the killing of the five-year-old Palestinian girl by the Israeli army was part of a systematic genocide.
Ben Hania expressed her concerns about the international community’s response to violence in Gaza. She emphasized the importance of accountability and justice in achieving peace. The director also highlighted the complicity of powerful governments and institutions in the killings.
Ben Hania’s decision not to accept the award has been seen as part of a growing trend within the film industry against the festival’s handling of Palestine-related issues. An open letter signed by 81 prominent film professionals, including actors and directors, condemned the Berlinale’s perceived anti-Palestinian stance and its failure to address international law violations.
The signatories also criticized Jury President Wim Wenders’ comments on filmmakers staying out of politics. Indian author Arundhati Roy withdrew from the festival in protest against Wenders’ remarks. The letter noted that filmmakers who spoke out about Palestinian issues were often reprimanded by senior festival programmers.
A recent Al Jazeera investigation revealed new details about Israeli forces’ use of thermobaric weapons in Gaza, which have caused widespread harm to Palestinians. The signatories also criticized the German government and festival leadership for their role in policing and silencing artists who advocate for Palestinian human rights.
The decision by film workers to boycott the Berlinale has gained momentum, with over 5,000 professionals pledging to refuse work with Israeli companies and institutions. Ben Hania’s statement emphasized that she would not let her documentary be used to “image-launder” the actions of those responsible for the killings.
