Billions of dollars worth of US military equipment destroyed in Iran conflict

US Military Suffers Estimated $2.8 Billion in Equipment Losses in Ongoing Conflict with Iran

A recent assessment by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has estimated that the United States has suffered losses of up to $2.8 billion in aerial equipment since the conflict with Iran began on February 28.

According to CSIS, the losses include the destruction of a radar surveillance plane valued at $700 million, which was struck by Iranian missiles and drones in Saudi Arabia on March 27. The incident occurred just days after US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper boasted about the military’s successes against Iran during a televised Cabinet meeting.

The CSIS estimate also includes damage to other US military equipment, including aircraft and radar systems, which were targeted by Iranian forces. The losses are believed to be in addition to those incurred at US bases in the region, as well as specialized equipment and naval assets.

Mark Cancian, a senior adviser with the Defense and Security Department at CSIS, conducted the calculations, which were based on available satellite imagery of the affected areas. However, he noted that some losses, including those resulting from “friendly fire,” are difficult to determine due to the lack of access to US bases in the region.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by the US military in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Omar Ashour, a professor of security and military studies, noted that while the US has disclosed some figures, full transparency is not possible due to political considerations.

The estimated losses are significant, but it remains to be seen how they will impact the US strategy in the region. The conflict began on February 28, and the US has been hosting troops from several Gulf nations where THAAD systems were implemented.
