Bolivias La Paz Sees Large Protests Over Presidents Resignation Demand

Bolivia Protests Escalate Amid Economic Crisis

Protesters in Bolivia have taken to the streets, blocking roads and demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz. The demonstrations, which began weeks ago, have grown more intense, with thousands of people converging on La Paz, the country’s administrative capital.

The protests are centered around wage increases, economic instability, and plans to privatize state-owned companies. Farmers, miners, teachers, public sector workers, and Indigenous communities are among those participating in the demonstrations.

Bolivia is facing its worst economic crisis in 40 years, with year-on-year inflation reaching 14 percent in April. The country’s purchasing power has been eroded, leading to deepening anger over rising living costs.

According to Ivan Alarcon, a 60-year-old farmer who traveled from Caquiaviri to join the protests, “We want him to resign because he’s incompetent. Bolivia is going through a moment of chaos.” The situation in La Paz has been volatile, with riot police and protesters clashing in central areas.

The government has reported at least two injuries among protesters, although authorities have not released an official toll. Images show protesters entering government offices and removing equipment. Local media reports over 100 detentions nationwide.

President Paz took office six months ago after a transition from largely socialist rule. He has implemented policies aimed at stabilizing the economy, including scrapping fuel subsidies. However, these measures have failed to address public concerns about fuel prices and shortages.
