Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz Announces Cabinet Reorganization Amid Protests
Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz has announced plans to reorganize his cabinet, citing a need for ministers who can listen to protesters’ concerns. The move comes as the country faces weeks of demonstrations and economic instability.
Paz made the announcement during a news conference on Wednesday, stating that the current cabinet structure is not effective in addressing the grievances of antigovernment protesters. He emphasized the importance of listening to the voices of citizens and finding solutions to the economic crisis.
The protests, which began since Paz’s inauguration in November, have been fueled by concerns over his government’s free-market reforms, including cuts to fuel subsidies. Thousands of farmers, laborers, miners, and teachers have taken to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the reforms.
The government has responded to the protests, depicting them as a threat to democracy and stability. Minister of Foreign Affairs Fernando Aramayo stated that the mass protests and roadblocks are aimed at destabilizing the country and disrupting the democratic order.
Former President Evo Morales, who continues to exert influence over Bolivian politics, has expressed support for the demonstrations. The Paz government has accused Morales of fomenting unrest, while the former president faces charges of statutory rape.
The US administration has expressed support for Paz’s government, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that the United States stands in support of Bolivia’s legitimate constitutional government. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has also been involved in the controversy, describing the protests as a “popular insurrection” and sparking tensions between the two countries.
The Bolivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday that it would ask the Colombian ambassador to leave the country, citing interference in domestic political affairs.
