Bolsonaro Denied Hospital Visit After Prison Fall Injury

Brazil’s Jailed Ex-President Suffers Head Injury in Prison Cell

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro fell out of his prison bed while sleeping and hit his head on a piece of furniture, according to his wife Michelle Bolsonaro. She posted an update on Instagram stating that they would be visiting the hospital for examinations.

However, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes denied Bolsonaro’s request to leave prison immediately for medical tests in Brasilia. The federal police stated that Bolsonaro received initial treatment in the morning and a doctor found minor injuries, which led to no need for hospitalization.

Bolsonaro has a history of hospitalizations and surgeries related to an attack during a 2018 campaign event. His legal team is allowed to request medical exams, but must schedule them in advance and provide justification for the procedures.

In December, Bolsonaro underwent medical procedures to treat a hernia and hiccups. He was discharged from the hospital on January 1 and returned to the Federal Police Superintendency in Brasilia, where he is serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election.

A federal police doctor reportedly found minor injuries during Bolsonaro’s initial medical treatment, leading Justice de Moraes to deny his request for hospitalization. The Supreme Court judge stated that Bolsonaro’s legal team can still request medical exams, but must follow the proper procedures and scheduling guidelines.
