Northern Irish Runner Aaron Beggs Reflects on Helping Exhausted Competitor at Boston Marathon
Aaron Beggs, a Northern Irish runner, has spoken out about his decision to help an exhausted competitor complete the 130th edition of the Boston marathon. The incident occurred during Monday’s race, where defending champions John Korir and Sharon Lokedi secured a Kenyan sweep.
According to videos filmed by bystanders, Ajay Haridasse, a 21-year-old Boston native, collapsed near a race barrier due to exhaustion. Beggs, who was in the same vicinity, immediately responded to the situation. He extended both arms to Haridasse and pulled him to his feet, with Brazilian runner Robson De Oliveira also providing support.
Beggs explained that his initial instinct to help Haridasse was driven by a desire to assist someone in need. “I looked at my watch, I looked at him again, and my natural instinct was to just go and pick him up,” he said.
The incident has garnered significant attention on social media, with many praising Beggs’ selfless act. Beggs attributed the video’s popularity to a desire for feel-good stories in an era dominated by negative news coverage. “We all need just a nice story in our lives just to make us smile, bring a tear to our eyes with happiness – it’s nice to be nice,” he said.
Beggs also expressed gratitude towards De Oliveira for his support during the incident. The three runners were able to complete the race together, creating a memorable moment that will likely be remembered for years to come.
