Global Attention Shifts Away from Gaza, BDS Movement Faces Challenges
The campaign to isolate Israel has gained momentum in recent years, with experts noting that the global spotlight on Gaza has never been more intense. For over two years, the world has witnessed widespread human suffering and devastation imposed upon the enclave by Israel. The international community has responded with growing condemnation, including sanctions against Israeli officials and companies linked to the occupied West Bank.
In response to the crisis, calls for boycotts of Israeli goods, divestment from companies profiting from Israel or its settlements, and expanded sanctions have grown louder. However, other global events, such as the war in Ukraine and tensions with Iran, have shifted attention away from Gaza and Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
As a result, the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement faces challenges in maintaining public attention and momentum. Despite this, the movement has had significant economic consequences for Israel and companies associated with it. Several international companies, including Carrefour and Airbnb, have faced reputational damage and divested from Israeli assets linked to settlements.
The International Court of Justice has also weighed in on the issue, issuing a ruling that may plausibly engage Israel in genocide. The court’s decision is part of an ongoing case brought by South Africa. In addition, criticism of Israel has become more mainstream in Western countries, particularly among young people who are horrified by the death toll in Gaza.
The economic impact of the BDS movement on Israel and its allies has been significant. Pension funds from around the world have divested from Israeli assets linked to settlements or withdrawn investments from companies tied to Israel. The chairman of the Israel Export Institute acknowledged that economic boycotts and BDS organizations present major challenges for Israeli industry abroad.
With ongoing violence in Gaza, the BDS movement must navigate a complex landscape to maintain public attention and momentum. Historian Nick Cull noted that the power of a boycott can rise and fall according to the prominence of an issue and success of specific campaigns.
