Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has expressed support for Barcelona player Lamine Yamal, who publicly condemned anti-Muslim chants in a recent match. The incident occurred during Spain’s friendly against Egypt last Tuesday, where fans directed chants at Yamal, who is Muslim.
Yamal stated that the chants were “intolerable” and aimed at the opposing team, but still unacceptable as a Muslim. He also criticized the use of his religion as a form of mockery on the pitch, calling it ignorant and racist.
Vinicius Junior, who has experienced racism himself while playing in Europe, praised Yamal for speaking out against the chants. “It’s always complicated” to discuss issues like this, Vinicius said, but he believes that players need to stick together in the fight against discrimination. He noted that those with a stronger voice, such as professional athletes, can help raise awareness and promote change.
Vinicius also referenced his own experience of being subjected to racist taunts, including an incident where Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni called him a monkey after he scored for Real Madrid in a Champions League match. Vinicius emphasized that racism is not limited to certain countries or regions, but is a global issue.
In a statement on the eve of the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Vinicius urged players to continue fighting against discrimination. “If we keep fighting together,” he said, “I think future players and people in general won’t have to go through this again.”
