Brazils President Lula to Meet with Former US President Trump Later This Week

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to visit the White House later this week, according to reports from Brazilian newspaper O Globo and Reuters news agency. The planned trip was first reported by O Globo on Monday, with subsequent confirmation from two anonymous Brazilian officials who stated that Lula would be traveling to the US in the coming days.

One of the sources indicated that Lula’s visit would take place on Wednesday, followed by a meeting with US President Donald Trump the following day. However, the White House has yet to confirm these reports.

Lula and Trump have had a complex relationship since taking office, marked by periods of tension and improvement. The US initially imposed tariffs on Brazilian goods and pressured Brazilian authorities to drop a case against former President Jair Bolsonaro over his involvement in a coup plot. Despite this, the two leaders spoke by phone in January, with Lula expressing his intention to visit the US in the future.

In October, Trump and Lula briefly met at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting was seen as an attempt to improve relations between the two countries.
