BRICS Grouping Remains Silent on US-Israel War in Iran
Since India took over as chair, the BRICS grouping of countries has appeared more cautious. The 11-member alliance, which includes Tehran, has not issued any statement or reaction to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel in Iran.
In contrast, when Brazil chaired the bloc last year, it quickly condemned US-Israeli joint attacks on Iran as a “violation of international law.” However, since India’s chairmanship began in December 2025, New Delhi’s interests seem to be taking precedence over the alliance’s objectives. Critics argue that India is signaling closer ties with Israel and the United States.
The BRICS grouping was formed in 2009 as an economic alliance and has since expanded to include security issues. Members have conducted joint military drills, including a recent event hosted by South Africa in January this year, where India opted out.
Three of the five founding members – Brazil, Russia, and South Africa – have issued individual statements condemning the conflict and denouncing violations of international law. However, the BRICS organization itself has not commented directly on the US-Israeli Operation Epic Fury in Iran.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa voiced concerns about the conflict on Wednesday, warning that the fighting could go beyond the Middle East. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin also criticized the joint US-Israel attacks and the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in strikes on Saturday.
The BRICS grouping has expanded to include Indonesia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates since 2024. The organization’s mandate has broadened to include security issues, but its response to the US-Israel war in Iran remains unclear.
