Bus Crash in Guatemala Claims at Least 15 Lives

A passenger bus traveling between Guatemala City and San Marcos crashed on the Inter-American Highway in western Guatemala, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. According to local authorities, at least 15 people have been killed and 19 injured in the incident.

The crash occurred in the Solola Department, specifically in an area known as “Alaska Peak,” which is characterized by rugged terrain. The bus, carrying passengers between Guatemala City and San Marcos, fell into a ravine approximately 75 meters deep for reasons that are currently unknown.

Firefighters responded to the scene, where they rescued those injured and recovered the bodies of the victims. Relatives of the passengers have also arrived at the scene and nearby hospitals in search of their loved ones.

The incident occurred on Saturday, with images shared by local firefighters showing the wrecked bus in the ravine. The area is known for dense fog, which can reduce visibility for drivers taking this route.

This incident marks the latest in a series of major bus crashes in Guatemala, with over 50 fatalities reported earlier in 2025 when another vehicle plunged into a polluted ravine outside Guatemala City.
