Veron Mosengo-Omba Resigns as CAF General Secretary
Veron Mosengo-Omba, the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) general secretary, has stepped down from his position. Mosengo-Omba cited a desire to devote himself to personal projects and expressed gratitude to CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, his teams, and others who have contributed to the organization’s progress.
Mosengo-Omba’s departure comes amid controversy surrounding the CAF board’s decision to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title. The move has sparked criticism and calls for an investigation into alleged corruption within the organization. Some employees had previously accused Mosengo-Omba of creating a toxic work environment, but an investigation found him to be innocent.
Mosengo-Omba is expected to run for the presidency of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s football federation in upcoming elections. If successful, he may become a contender for CAF’s top job should Motsepe resign. However, Motsepe has denied speculation about his potential succession.
Earlier this month, Motsepe acknowledged that CAF was facing questions over its integrity. The Senegalese government has since called for an international investigation into the organization’s management. CAF has announced that Samson Adamu will take over as acting general secretary.
Mosengo-Omba stated that he is retiring from his position at 66, citing a desire to leave the organization with peace of mind. He expressed hope that the progress made during his tenure would be sustained.
