US Envoy Mike Huckabee’s Response to Israeli Abuse Allegations Fails to Yield Accountability
Washington, DC - The US State Department has stated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of American citizens in the occupied West Bank. However, rights advocates claim that the lack of accountability for Israeli abuses against Americans is perpetuating a cycle of impunity.
At least 11 US citizens have been killed by Israeli settlers or soldiers since 2022, including 19-year-old Nasrallah Abu Siyam, who was shot dead in the village of Mikhmas near Jerusalem. William Asfour, Chicago chapter coordinator for American Muslims for Palestine, expressed frustration with the government’s response to Abu Siyam’s death, stating that it is “a joke” and that the US should take decisive action.
Asfour also highlighted the lack of accountability in previous cases, including the killing of Khamis Ayyad, a father of five from Chicago, who was killed by Israeli settlers in 2022. The US Justice Department has not opened an investigation into Ayyad’s death, and no one in Israel has faced charges.
The US has provided Israel with over $21 billion in aid since 2022, but advocates argue that Washington could compel accountability by leveraging this funding. Mike Huckabee, the US envoy to Israel, has been criticized for his lack of pressure on Israeli policies, including his public statements defending pro-Israel activists and amplifying anti-Muslim content.
Huckabee’s comments have sparked controversy, including a statement suggesting he would approve of Israel taking control of several countries in the Middle East. The ambassador’s response to Abu Siyam’s death has also been met with criticism, as it did not mention the incident.
Rights advocates are calling for the US government to take decisive action to ensure accountability for Israeli abuses against Americans.
