Al Jazeera Reports Fatalities in Gaza Following Israeli Air Attack
A fatal air attack on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza has resulted in the death of Ahmed Wishah, a cameraman for Al Jazeera. According to colleagues on the ground, two people were killed and at least one other Palestinian was injured during the raid.
Al Jazeera Media Network has issued a statement condemning the “deliberate killing” of Mr. Wishah, who is reported to be the 12th Al Jazeera media worker to have been killed in Gaza since October 2023. The network has also called on the international community and legal institutions to take action against Israeli officials involved in these incidents.
The attack in Bureij camp brings the total number of people killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza on Saturday to 10. Other casualties reported include four family members, including two children, whose home was struck in central Gaza City, as well as a man and woman who were killed or injured in separate incidents.
According to Palestinian civil defence authorities, Mr. Wishah is the brother of Mohammed Wishah, who was killed on April 8 by Israeli shelling while travelling in his vehicle. Al Jazeera had previously condemned Mr. Wishah’s killing, stating that it was part of Israel’s “systematic policy of targeting journalists and silencing the voice of truth”.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported a pattern of Israel accusing Palestinian journalists of being terrorists without providing credible evidence. In response to Saturday’s incident, Al Jazeera stated its determination to take legal action against those responsible for the “crimes” against its staff in Gaza.
Since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October 2023, at least 260 Palestinian journalists have been killed, according to the CPJ. The health ministry has reported that since the conflict began, 73,018 people have been killed and 173,273 wounded.
